Marked and widening socioeconomic inequalities in type 2 diabetes prevalence in Scotland

Background This study investigated the association between socioeconomic status and type 2 diabetes (T2D) prevalence in Scotland 2021 tested null hypothesis that inequalities had not changed since they were last described for 2001–2007. Methods Data from a national population-based database 35-to-84-year-olds mid-year population estimates 2019 stratified by sex fifths of Scottish Index Multiple Deprivation used to calculate age-specific T2D. Age-standardised was estimated using European Standard Population with relative risks (RRs) compared most (Q1) least (Q5) deprived each sex, against similar 2001 2007. Results Complete data available 255 764 people (98.9%) lowest women Q5 (3.4%) highest men Q1 (11.6%). RRs have increased 2.00 (95% CI 1.52 2.62) 2001–2007 2.48 2.43 2.53) 1.58 1.20 2.07) 2007 1.89 1.86 1.92) men. Conclusions Socioeconomic T2D widened 2021. Further research is required investigate potential medium-term effects COVID-19 pandemic.
